A wire rope consists of multiple strands of metal wire, laid symmetrically around a central core. The core consists of an independent wire rope or a steel strand core. Wire ropes can also have a non-steel core, made of polypropylene, jute and sisal. The core material relies on its tensile strength, along with the multiple symmetric strands that lend it the required structural strength.
Slings are application oriented forms of wire ropes and strands. Wire slings are fabricated by twisting an ordinary wire rope in right hand ordinary lay. They are custom designed according to the application. Fabrication of high quality slings typically consists of galvanized steel and black ropes. The central core of such assemblies is made-up of either a steel based core or a fiber based core. The constitution of the core material in such an assembly is application dependent. The end fittings of wire slings consist of custom made hooks, loops and other shape formed fittings, specific to the fastening point.
Slings find applications in heavy industries, transportation and for securing multipoint detachable suspensions. Sling assemblies perform especially well in maritime and transport applications. Multiple wire slings fastened with the appropriate tension allow for uniform distribution of loads across all the wires. Slings are an efficient medium of redundancy based securing applications, where secure fastenings and load distributions are desired.
A Strand is a component assembly consisting of 1 x n wires overlaid in a twist configuration. The n stands for the number of wires. Strands consist of a multiple wire core. A Strand is used for stay, earthing and structural applications.
